The little Dress for Christmas

So, I can now post this, it's done. Pattern used was Simplicity 4511. I made a few changes. I didn't add the contrast band on the bottom of the skirt, (didn't have enough fabric, and it would of been too long). Didn't add the bow and tie to the waist.
It took awhile, but it wasn't too bad of a project. Above is a close-up of the trim around the waist.

Above is the dress, with the petticoat underneath, looks a little lopsided. The skirt is a full circle, made from a silver/blue crepe back satin, the bodice is a piece of blue velvet. It also has a white & blue ribbon trim around the neck.

Below is a pic of the dress, without the petticoat underneath. It has a zipper in the back.
I did like making this, and will probably make it again, perhaps in something like cotton, for the summer.

And now, finishing some other projects.

Doughnut Muffins

Here is a recipe I found in an old cookbook, they have the taste and consistency of doughnuts, and they are baked. These were topped with cinnamon sugar, but I think they would also taste good, if you dipped the tops into a little glaze (if you like them sweeter).

Doughnut Muffins

3 1/2 (half) cups sifted all purpose flour

1 tbsp. baking powder

1 tsp. salt

1/2 (half) tsp. nutmeg

1 1/2 (half) cups sugar

2 egg

2/3 (2 thirds) cup shortening

1 1/2 (half) cups milk

2 tsp. vanilla

Combine flour, baking powder, salt, nutmeg and sugar in a bowl. In another bowl beat eggs, shortening, milk and vanilla. Add to the dry ingredients and stir just enough to moisten. Spray muffin tins with a non-stick spray, fill 2/3 (2 thirds) full, and bake at 350*F for 15 - 20 minutes, or till done. Depending on your oven, and size of muffin tin (if you make them larger), you might have to adjust the time.

enjoy

The Finished Costume

Here is the finished costume.

I did make the headpiece from the cowl-neck, with some sheer black fabric.

Well, almost finished in this pic, I had to shorten the black overskirt.

Youky had to be in the picture with me.

My Costume for Halloween

I had an idea, but no pattern. I wanted to make a period dress, sort of. I remembered seeing a post on craftster.org, a tutorial on making a corset from a t-shirt. This is where I got my inspiration.

Found this black, long-sleeve velour top at a thrift store, a little tight, but that's ok.

It also has this cowl neck, which I cut off.

I already had this piece of embroidered taffetta, which I thought would be perfect.

Here is a close up of the fabric, the roses are velour, and the stitching is dark grey.

Here is where I had to figure out where to cut for the front, didn't want it too low or too high.

After cutting the neck out, I used some stretchy binding, (a thrift store find), to go around the neck.

This is a little dark, all I did was just sew a piece of the fabric to the front of the top. At first I was going to cut a piece out of the front, and make an insert, but that would be too much work.

Here is a close-up of the neck and front.

Here is the top (almost done), with it is a matching skirt, which is from another costume from a few years back. The colour is almost the same, ( I will also make an overskirt in black to go over this, which will be open in the middle).

Here is where I stitched by hand, the loops, which I will then use to lace up the front with matching ribbon.

Here is the finished top, I used some pieces of velvet ribbon on the sides to finish it, ( and to cover the ends of the loops).

Here is a close-up of the loop and ribbon.

Here is the neck which I cut off, looks interesting, I think I can make a 'headpiece', from it.

Here is another thrift shop find, sheer black fabric, with tiny sequins, it doesn't photogragh well, but they are very small, and pick up every colour.

This is it for now, still a few things to do, but it will be finished, and I'll have pics up.

Alaska Trip

We did get to see the 'calving' of a glacier, that's what they call it when a piece breaks off....of course I wasn't ready with my camera, but I did get to see it.
The same thing with the wildlife, there one minute, then when you are ready...where did they go...... (please come back, don't be camera shy) . That's why I also bought a few postcards, just in case.

An actual iceberg, too bad it was overcast that day as we were cruising Glacier Bay.

This is how I got up to Alaska. Very nice way to travel, this was not my first cruise.
The sights were amazing, and the food on board was very tasty too, more to come...

well.....

I'm still here, been busy though. Then there are times when I just don't have anything interesting to put here. I haven't been sewing much lately. But, Halloween is coming up and I have a few ideas.
Also, I'm going on vacation. I will take pictures, so that will give me something to put here. I've done lots of travelling, but this time I will keep in mind this blog. I'll take extra pictures of things, and this time, I will take pictures of the food.
So, I'm off cruising to Alaska for one week. This trip I don't even have to fly. Lucky me.

Little Green Bubble Dress

I have been doing some sewing, in between work and other things. Sometimes it's just nice to stay at home. I have started to re-organize my work space, perhaps having everything in some sort of order will give me (more) inspiration. There are times when I just 'add to my collection', being fabric, trims, etc.

I have been inspired to make a small dress, (for my great-niece) so I went through my leftovers, came up with this.

I used a pattern for the bodice, front & back, (New Look #6577).

There was just a piece left over, just the right size for the skirt, (approx. 12" in length and 44" in width).

The finished dress has a small bow on the front, (I used some of the same ribbon up on the shoulders), it has no zipper, as I didn't have one, also it's still a little big, so why bother. ( zippers really aren't my thing, but I will put one in , if I have to when I make something ).

Here is the finished dress, I hope to get a few 'action' shots of this dress being modelled.

Here is a close-up of the bow, it's iridescent and picks up the green that's in the dress.

I'm really pleased with how this turned out. I have another 'dress' project planned. I just have to figure out what fabric to use.

Another Project....

I haven't done that much lately, (busy), but things have slowed down a bit now, so I have time to make a few projects. I am always looking for things to do. I make notes, have a projects folder, so all I need is time and inspiration. So this past weekend I made something for myself, just a pair of capri pants, nothing special. They didn't take long, so then I decided to make a small outfit for my great-niece.
It's a cute top with matching pants. After cutting it out, I looked at it, and thought that it's a little big, but oh well, there's always next summer. Fabric is a poly-cotton blend, the black is printed on the coral fabric, which is different.
Cost of this project, fabric - 2 m @ $1.97 per m, = $3.94
pattern - .99, (thrift store find)
Plus thread & elastic, which I already have in my stash.

Well, I get to hit another milestone.....

I really don't feel it yet. Not sure what it would feel like anyway.
I think that I'll stop counting from now on.
Besides, like the card says, 'do something you've never done before', which I am planning to........ ( and I will try to remember to have my camera nearby to document these events).

it's a long weekend

Weather permitting, I'll take my dog out, might try going to another park, will try to take some pictures.

having a little fun.....

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

At www.meez.com
you can make something like this, of course I don't look exactly like that, but that's what makes it fun. You can change everything from hair, outfits, your whole look, even backgrounds, it's fun, and can be addictive.

Happy Mother's Day

Made a card, by scanning an old photo onto cardstock, adding some stickers to it. Wanted to do something different.

Also made a travel jewelery organizer, out of some purple fabric, ( it looks different in a couple of pictures, not sure why).
Found the pattern in an old crafts book, made a few changes to it, but it turned out looking nice. It has a small pouch, and a little ring holder, held down by velcro. Made a separate drawstring pouch to go with it, because I had enough fabric from my stash.
Used some purple ribbon to tie it together.

Took her out for lunch on Saturday, which was sort of a surprise, we were out anyway. We had fish & chips, very good, wish I had my camera, could of made a blog about that too.
Maybe next time,
Happy Mother's Day
